Hypertension Test

In 2006, an important test in my life was a High Blood Pressure or Hypertension Test. That test revealed that I had a medical condition with an unknown cause and an unknown cure - Primary Hypertension - known as The Silent Killer.

Wake Up Call

After realizing the potential life threatening danger that complements high blood pressure - and being made aware of some of these dangers - no signs, no symptoms, silent, insidious, malicious and deadly, then, I think most people would welcome Hypertension testing.

A Little History On Blood Pressure Testing

Testing or measuring blood pressure was recorded back in 1733 by the Reverend Stephen Hales, a British veterinarian.

He took a horse and inserted a brass pipe into an artery. This brass pipe was connected to a glass tube. Hales observed the blood in the pipe rising and concluded that this must be due to a pressure in the blood.

It was not until 1847 that human blood pressure was recorded. the method used was Carl Ludwig's Kymograph - a device for measuring pressure - he still had to use the invasive means - invade or puncture the artery.

In 1855 Karl Vierordt found that there was enough pressure in arterial pulse - to use an inflatable cuff around the arm to constrict the artery.

In 1881, Samuel Siefried Karl Ritter von Basch invented the sphygmomanometer. His device consisted of water-filled bag connected to a manometer.

In 1896, Scipione Riva-Rocci developed the mercury sphygmomanometer. This design was the prototype of the modern mercury sphygmomanometer.

In 1905, Nikolai Korotkoff was the first to observe the sounds at certain points in the inflation and deflation of the cuff - the sounds were caused by the abnormal passage of blood through the artery - corresponding to the systolic and diastolic blood pressures - with the use of a stethoscope to listen for the sounds of blood flowing through the artery.

Fast Forward To Hypertension Test

Now that we are living in the digital age - testing, checking or monitoring your blood pressure can be conveniently performed in your home - all by yourself.

For home use, there are a number of blood pressure monitors that will do a good job in testing your pressure.

Some Specifics About High Blood Pressure Monitors

Monitors In The Doctor's Office

1) Aneroid Sphygmomanometer - a device used to measure blood pressure comprising an aflatable cuff to restrict blood flow, and a mercury or mechanical manometer to measure the pressure - used in conjuction with a means to determine at pressure the blood flow is just starting, and at what pressure it is unrestricted.

2) Manual Sphygmomanometers are used with a stethoscope.

Monitors In Your Home

1) Automatic Inflation Digital Monitor - push button control to manually adjust inflation to suite your comfort level - completely automatic inflation/deflation system with cuff.

2) Wrist Digital Blood Pressure Monitor or Tester -

3) Finger Blood Pressure Monitor or Tester -
